How is the convergence of the cleaning, FM and waste management industries affecting companies, and how are they expanding their services to provide more of a one-stop-shop in response to demand?

The break-neck speed with which we live our lives in the 21st century makes us appreciate products and services that provide quick, convenient results, encompassing a number of functions within one handy package. The smart phone is an excellent example of this – it’s a camera, computer, diary, encyclopaedia, e-reader, portable TV – oh, and you can make phone calls on it too.

A similar trend for pooling resources is happening, albeit more slowly, in the cleaning, FM and waste management industries. The crossover between the services that each one provides is becoming ever more apparent in terms of clientele and strategic direction. Mutual benefits are on offer as the drive for cost efficiencies continues to gather pace, making partnering up to deliver integrated services a smart option.

Technology has helped the recycling and waste management industry to increase the amount of different materials that can be given a ‘new life’, which echoes the sustainability aims of all businesses. The cleaning industry is doing its bit too, offering ways to clean hygienically but with a ‘greener’ approach – using less chemicals, water or energy. Facilities managers need to ensure that their buildings function in the most efficient and effective ways possible, while minimising the impact activities have on the environment. This means that service providers who can deliver high standards with added sustainability will have an edge on less future-focussed competitors.

As client and industry needs continue to merge, more joint working and sharing of best practice will undoubtedly increase. All three sectors can help each other in terms of training and specialist knowledge, which could translate into more business and profit for them, and even better services for customers. A winning situation for everyone involved!
