During October, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) announced a new initiative for the FM sector titled the Innovation challenge, helping companies in the sector to make better use of assets and materials by piloting new approaches to management.
This will provide opportunities to offer innovative services, reduce costs and demonstrate corporate responsibility for resources. Pilot schemes will focus on the priority areas of clothing, furniture, electrical and maintenance products but other areas will be considered.
Expressions of interest should be made as soon as possible, before mid-November where feasible as pilots are set to start before the end of March 2013.
WRAP is working with many different industry sectors, including FM, hospitality and the grocery sector to encourage more efficient use of resources and reduce waste. During October it announced a new set of results for the performance of phase 2 of the Courtauld Commitment, a voluntary scheme aimed at reducing food and packaging waste in the grocery sector. The figures show a significant reduction in supply chain waste, which has been cut by 8.8% – much more than the initial 5% target.
