JCB machines put Economic Skips on top of the pile

Economic Skips has been providing professional waste management solutions for businesses in Greater London since the early 1970s and has an unusual way of dealing with the industrial waste that passes through its facility.

Economic Skips has developed a high-level approach by positioning its JCB JS220 – a 22-tonne tracked excavator – on the waste itself rather than having all its machines operating at ground level.

This innovative way of working makes life easier for the machine’s operative, and really puts the JCB machine’s credentials to the test in the harsh and dirty environment.

Chris Guinnelly, Economic Skips’ Plant and Yard Manager, said: “We’ve been using the JS220 for this task for over a year now and are delighted with how well it handles the difficult job and tough environment. The hydraulic raised cab means we can position the machine above the waste and see into the hopper we’re loading making it safer and more efficient. The intelligent reversible fan and wide-core radiator are great at ensuring the machine keeps cool even when we’re working it hard.”

Economic Skips has used a JS160W wheeled excavator fitted with a selector grab and fixed raised cab for the past eight years to load material into shredders and has recently added a 437 T4i Wastemaster wheeled loader to its fleet. The powerful and manoeuvrable 437 has solid tyres and extra cab protection making it perfect for working with material at ground level, below the JS220.

All three of these JCB machines operate without a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which reduces the danger of overheating and sparks which is crucial when working with waste materials in such an enclosed space.

Chris Guinnelly added: “We started working with JCB machines thanks to my predecessor Hugh Murphy who has recently retired. When it came to choosing our new machines we worked closely together and agreed that JCB offered the robust and adaptable machines we need in our tough environment.”
